Netflix has bought the rights to several other classic fantasy book series in recent years to build up its children’s programming offering. As recently as 2003, Nelvana held the rights to a Redwall TV adaptation, but the project never moved forward. This is the first time the series, which chronicles the adventures of animals who live at Redwall Abbey, has been optioned for film. They’ve collectively sold more than 30 million copies in 20-plus languages since the first title was published in 1986. And this will be followed by what Netflix is calling an “event series” focused on one character from the franchise’s 23 books. The streamer already has an animated feature film brewing, with Patrick McHale ( Over the Garden Wall) writing the script. The bestselling Redwall fantasy book series by author Brian Jacques has been optioned for TV and film development by Netflix.
